Your Breast Augmentation Consultation
Your consultation in John’s Creek for breast augmentation will include a discussion about your expectations and desires. Dr. Patricia Yugueros will address your concerns about the procedure, including its limitations and risks. After examining you, she will inform you about the different types and shapes of breast implants, and recommend the breast implant that will provide the best results for you.
The more information you have, the better prepared for the consultation you will be. The internet is a great resource for breast augmentation information, but unfortunately, it has outdated and confusing information as well. Dr. Yugueros recommends these three sites, which are informative and concise:
- American Society of Plastic Surgeons – official website of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons
- American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery – official website of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons
- RealSelf.com – a website where patients ask questions about real plastic surgeons.
Your breast enhancement consultation will take about an hour and include:
- Completing a health information and demographics form
- Completing and signing a consent form
- Completing an insurance form
- Digital images that will help depict the results you can expect
- Before and after pictures of people who have had the same procedure
We believe an informed patient is the best patient! For this reason, we invite you to call us at any time for answers to questions you might have forgotten to ask during your consultation!
Breast Augmentation Atlanta – Size
We understand that size is important to you. It is one reason why you are considering breast augmentation. Your decision on implant size will be one you live with, so it’s important to get it right. Choosing too small will be a disappointment, and too large could render discomfort and pain to your lower extremities.
It is best to focus on look instead of size. Pictures of models, celebrities, or even friends, can give us a good idea of what you wish to achieve. Please browse our before and after gallery for further research.
Some of our patients find the rice test helpful in determining the look they seek. It’s easy, just cut out the boot areas of a pair of pantyhose, fill each with rice, and place it within a sports bra while trying on various garments. Experiment while changing amounts of rice, and take notes and pictures. Record your findings and bring them to consultation.
Types of Breast Implants
Both saline and silicone implants are proven safe and offer outstanding results.
Breast implants come in two basic types: saline and silicone gel. Both are FDA-approved and have provided great results to our patients.
Saline breast implants – have a silicone outer shell that is filled with a sterilized saltwater solution. These implants are inserted deflated, then filled after placement. This requires a smaller incision while reducing the risk of scarring. They generally cost 25% less than silicone implants.
Silicone breast implants – are silicone shells filled with silicone. They have the reputation of feeling more like natural breast tissue than saline, but they are inserted inflated requiring a longer incision.
Gummy bear implants or form-stable breast implants have a thicker volume of silicone than their first-generation counterparts, making them firmer and less likely to rupture. The shape is more natural, projected at the bottom and tapered at the top.
Breast Implant Shapes
Round and teardrop (anatomic) are the two basic shapes available for breast implants.
Round breast implants – are the preferred choice of most plastic surgeons due to ease of insertion and low revision rates. If breast implants rotate, the shape remains the same due to their round shape.
Teardrop (anatomic) breast implants – have a more natural shape. If these implants rotate after placement, a revision is required because the breast will appear crooked. These shapes are popular with patients whose breasts have suffered from pregnancy, weight loss, or breastfeeding. The advent of texturing has improved the placement staying intact and reduced revisions.
Breast Augmentation Atlanta – What to Expect
Breast augmentation surgery is usually an outpatient procedure, so you should be able to return home soon after your operation.
You will receive general anesthesia for your surgery which will last approximately two hours.
During surgery, incisions will be made underneath the breast crease, under the arm, around the nipples, or in the naval. Proper care will be taken to minimize visible scarring.
Dr. Yugueros will create a small pocket between the pectoral muscle and the breast tissue, or underneath the pectoral muscle. The implant will be placed inside the pocket, and the incision closed with sutures. The breasts will be supported by a post-surgical garment to with the healing process.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
You will be given written instructions to recover from your breast augmentation surgery. The instructions will instruct how to prevent infection and when to schedule follow-ups with Dr. Yugueros.
After surgery, you may feel sore for several days. Pain medication will be prescribed to aid in your discomfort during recovery. Bruising should be minimal, but swelling can last for several weeks. Due to the swelling, the final results of your breast augmentation will not be visible for a few weeks. You will, however, see an immediate difference in the appearance of your breasts!
You should be able to return to work within a week after your surgery. During recovery, a surgical bra should be worn, and physical activities limited to several weeks. Rest and sleep are important to the healing process, and you should be positioned on your back. Regular examinations and routine mammograms can help ensure that any complications are detected and treated early.
Exercise After Breast Augmentation Surgery
Listening to your body and being patient should be the unbroken rule for resuming physical exercise after your surgery.
Your body is the best indicator as to when to get back to your routine of workouts. Returning to exercise too early can cause serious setbacks, like muscle tears, implant shifts, and internal bleeding. When in doubt to start or continue, error on the side of waiting.
Your team at Luna Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa in John’s Creek will be an excellent resource to advise you with your post-operation workouts.
Massaging Breasts After Breast Augmentation
A week after surgery till about 3 months you are encouraged to massage or have your breast massaged. These massages will keep the soft tissue around the breast implant open.
Massaging the breast will allow the pocket and the soft tissue surrounding the implant to remain larger, allowing the implant to move.
Massaging should prevent the soft tissue capsule from shrinking and pressing the implant out of shape. This is known as capsular contraction, and can only be prevented by implant displacement massages
Potential Breast Augmentation Complications
The decision for surgery must be calculated with results vs risks associated. Dr. Yugueros will advise and inform you of any risks associated with your specific procedure.
Possible breast augmentation surgery risks include:
- Anesthesia risks
- Changes in nipple or breast sensation
- Poor scarring
- Faulty position of the implant
- Leakage or rupture
- Capsular contracture
- Fluid acclamation
- Wrinkling of the skin over the implant
- Persistent pain
- Possibility of revision surgery
Choosing the Best Breast Augmentation Surgeon in Atlanta
Although breast augmentation is common and less risk-averse than 30 years ago, choosing a surgeon for any surgery is of paramount importance. Sadly, any doctor with a license can legally perform breast augmentation surgery despite having no specialized training.
It is vital for your plastic surgeon to have the right qualifications and credentials. These include board certification, and being in good standing with the various medical boards. It also includes education, experience, and satisfied patients.
Don’t forget the support staff. Make sure they are professional, friendly, and caring. These will be the people to lean on during your recovery. Make sure you are comfortable with the entire team.
It is important to do your research and visit the doctor personally. It is important to visit the facility where the surgery will take place. Don’t rush! You should take the time to get well-informed.
