Who is a Candidate for Atlanta Liposuction?
The best candidates for liposuction are men and women who are at a healthy and stable weight but have areas of excess fat that do not respond to weight loss and exercise.
Liposuction is not a substitute for diet and exercise. It will not improve or correct dimpled skin (or cellulite).
Your Consultation for Liposuction
During your consultation for liposuction, Dr. Yugueros will discuss your desires, expectations, and concerns as well as the limits and risks of the surgery. She will carefully review your medical history, examine the areas you would like treated with liposuction, and recommend options that can best help you achieve your goals.
The Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction is a very safe outpatient procedure. Less extensive liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. Extensive procedures, especially if they are combined with other cosmetic surgeries, require a general anesthetic and overnight hospital stay.
During liposuction, Dr. Yugueros uses a small tube (or cannula) to break down and suction fat from the body. She uses a special (tumescent) technique that significantly reduces bruising, swelling, and pain after your procedure.
The tumescent technique involves injecting the excess fat with a large amount of anesthetic liquid before suctioning. The liquid causes the pockets of fat to become swollen and firm, allowing the liposuction tube to travel smoothly beneath the skin while removing fat.
Dr. Yugueros will make small ¼-inch incisions in the natural creases of your body where they will be concealed. For this reason, scarring is rare or minimal. Dr. Yugueros uses dissolvable stitches.
Atlanta Liposuction Recovery and Results
Dr. Yugueros will give you detailed instructions about your liposuction procedure. The length of your procedure depends on the number of areas you are having treated.
Dr. Yugueros can recommend over-the-counter or prescription medication to ensure that you are comfortable for the first few days after your liposuction procedure.
After the procedure, Dr. Yugueros will give you a compression garment to wear to help with healing and minimize swelling. Because healing from liposuction is a gradual process and varies with each patient, you might need to wear the compression garments for days or weeks.
The areas you have had treated are likely to be bruised for a few weeks after surgery. While most of the swelling will be gone within a month or 2, some minor swelling can remain for 6 or more months.
Although Dr. Yugueros will encourage you to walk as soon as possible after your liposuction procedure, she will encourage you to avoid strenuous activity for 2 to 4 weeks.
Most patients return to work 2 to 3 days after liposuction, but some patients need as much as 2 weeks before returning to work. The length of your downtime after liposuction will depend on the extent of the procedure.
In some cases, touch-up liposuction can be used to refine the outcome. The results of your liposuction procedure are long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight.
