Corrective ear surgery (or ear pinning / otoplasty) can minimize the appearance of prominent ears and correct other cosmetic ear problems.
In most ear correction surgeries, ears are set back closer to the head and / or they are made smaller. But cosmetic ear surgery also can be used to correct congenital cosmetic ear problems and reconstruct earlobes that have been damaged in an injury. In addition, some older women who have had pierced ears for a very long time choose corrective earlobe surgery to reduce the size of the opening for their earrings and create younger-looking earlobes.
Patricia Yugueros, MD, has expertise in ear pinning surgery
and other cosmetic ear surgeries
to restore ears to a pleasing size, location,
Are You a Candidate for Ear Correction Surgery?
Because ears continue growing after birth, the best candidates for otoplasty are children aged 5 years and older. In addition, it is wise to correct prominent ears when children are young to preempt teasing and low self-esteem.
Adults also can have ear pinning surgery and other corrective cosmetic ear surgeries.
Consultation for Ear Correction Surgery
A consultation for otoplasty includes an evaluation of your ears and discussion about your expectations and concerns.
Dr. Yugueros is experienced with children and sensitive to their emotional needs. For this reason, she will ensure that your child feels safe and secure throughout his or her visits and the surgical process.
Dr. Yugueros will review the patient’s medical history, evaluate the ears, and take photographs. She will then discuss the surgery, including its limits and risks. She will then recommend an approach for the best possible results.
The Otoplasty Procedure
Children who have ear pinning usually receive general anesthesia, whereas adults may have the procedure under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation.
Otoplasty usually lasts 2 to 3 hours. During cosmetic ear surgery, the ears are sculpted so that they are located closer to the head, and incisions are made behind the ears to hide the scars.
Ear Pinning and Cosmetic Ear Surgery Recovery and Results
Dr. Yugueros will give you detailed instructions about what to do to prepare for and recover from surgery. Most cosmetic ear surgery patients receive dissolvable stitches.
There may be some discomfort for a few days after surgery, but it can be managed with oral over-the-counter or prescription pain medications.
The patient will wear a head dressing and headband to encourage proper healing. There will be some swelling for several months, but the majority of swelling will resolve within a few weeks. You can expect some bruising for a week or 2 after surgery. Some patients also report mild itching as the incisions heal.
Although patients must limit certain activities for several weeks to prevent anything from bending the ears, almost all patients can return to school or work in about a week.
Once swelling has fully resolved and healing is complete, the ears will have a much more natural appearance.
